The park is the only subtropical wilderness in the U.S. It contains temperate and tropical plant communities, as well as marine and estuarine environments. Take a boat trip from the Gulf Coast Visitor Center to see dolphins, birds and other wildlife. Boat tours (for a fee) depart every hour. Free ranger-led activities through April 2011 include: Canoe Tours - 10am-2pm every Saturday, Sunday and Wednesday, bring your own canoe/kayak or rent one on site; Eyes on the Everglades Talk - daily at 11 am and 2 pm; Nature Walk, daily at 4:15 pm; Bike Tour - Thursdays 10 am-Noon; Afternoon Canoe Trip - Thursdays and Fridays 2-4 pm; Evening Canoe Trip - 5-8pm Jan. 29, Feb. 12 & 26, March 15.
